Advising Philosophy

My advising philosophy is rooted in student success through a holistic and strength-based approach. I strive to meet students where they are, regardless of their academic and personal background, and help them feel comfortable navigating the complexities of higher education with confidence. Having personally experienced transferring institutions, changing majors, and attending both community and out-of-state colleges, I understand some of the challenges students face. This background guides my ability to connect with students from diverse paths and provides practical, empathetic guidance.

I take a holistic approach to advising, encouraging students to challenge themselves academically while also prioritizing well-being and engagement outside the classroom. I encourage students to take control of their college experiences by getting involved with UNM outside of academics through student organizations, intramurals, and creative outlets. I see this as a vital component of personal and academic growth.

About Me

CONTINUED ADVISING PHILOSOPHY

I use a strength-based approach to help students reflect on their abilities, set meaningful goals, and view setbacks as opportunities for growth. Building trust and showing genuine care is also at the center of my advising practice. I engage students with questions that go beyond academics, checking in on mental health, study habits, and personal interests. Combined with my experience working at UNM, these conversations have helped me feel comfortable referring students to the proper resources when student situations go beyond my scope. Whether it’s following up on a referral to financial aid or helping clarify degree plans, I believe in going the extra mile for students. To continually grow in this evolving field, I participate in professional development opportunities, collaborate with fellow advisors, and stay informed on university policy changes.

My confidence as an advisor has been developed through an in-depth advising training course, hands-on experience, and learning from seasoned professionals across various advisement units.  Ultimately, my goal is to guide students through degree completion and aid them in getting the absolute most out of their time at UNM. I see academic advising not just as a role, but as an opportunity to positively impact students’ lives in a meaningful way.

BIO

I was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. My college journey began at Lamar Community College in Colorado where I studied athletic training and played baseball. After two years at Lamar CC, I earned my Associate of Science and returned home to continue my education at the University of New Mexico (UNM). In May 2023, I graduated from UNM with a B.S. in Community Health Education. In my free time, I enjoy working out, listening to music, and riding my bike.
