Advising Philosophy

My advising approach is rooted in inclusivity and mentorship, recognizing the unique needs of students and where they are in their academic journey. In my advising practice I strive to help students identify their own motivations and aspirations for getting their degree. It’s important to address the more practical components of higher education, like policies and degree plans, but it is just as important to help students frame their education in a wider context, so they can see how their academics translate to their experiences outside of college. I encourage students to engage in research and professional development opportunities that will allow them to pursue their academic interests beyond the classroom.

Through advisement, I want students to feel empowered to reflect on their identity and values, more specifically what this looks like in their current learning environment. This process is also transformational, encouraging the student to advocate for themselves and ask questions during their meeting with me. Open communication and creating an environment where students feel safe to voice ideas or concerns, is critical for helping them see the importance of their experience in education and develop a process of lifelong learning.

About Me

My name is Ashley! I’m from Houston, TX and received my Master of Fine Arts from Texas Tech University. I’ve been an Academic Advisor for almost 5 years and love helping students find their path in Higher Education. I’ve recently moved to Albuquerque from Albany, New York and am excited to learn more about the culture and history of New Mexico! I am also an artist and enjoy painting in my studio. In my free time I love to hike, play board games, and listen to podcasts.
