The College of Arts & Sciences

The College of Arts & Sciences (A&S) is the academic heart of UNM.

We are the thinkers.
The writers.
The scientists.
The humanitarians.

Our graduates change the world by uncovering their voices at UNM.
Our academic community provides the support to amplify their messages.

Our programs of study are wide-ranging, but we all share these traits: critical thinking, deep questioning, and a passion to contribute new knowledge to the world.

The "Arts" in A&S refers to the Liberal Arts - the knowledge and skills that contribute to critical, interdisciplinary thinking that the Ancient Greeks believed to be essential to effective participation in a public life. It's both knowledge about the world around you, and the critical mindset to ask what could be and how we might get there. Our programs of study are intended to give graduates strong foundations in critical thinking, regardless of the area of study. We encourage dynamic, cross-disciplinary thinking while grounding you with the fundamental skills, methods, and knowledge in a given field.

We have over 140 majors, minors, and certificates available to undergraduates, including several Bachelor to Master Degree programs.

Undergraduate students in A&S have the uncommon opportunity to work on world-changing research at a flagship, R1 institution. No matter your major, you can get involved in the academic research process with our faculty.

In your studies, you can focus deeply in one area, or expand your horizons by learning something you may not have learned before, like Nahuatl or volcanology.

Expand your mind and your perspective.
Figure out the "whys".
Explore with us and change the world for the better.
