Advising Philosophy
I believe in creating an inclusive, safe environment for my students. My job is to empower them to take control of their degree and to explore their options and interests. I believe in using an appreciative advising style to collaborate with students to create goals, dreams, and inspire their confidence to trust that they can excel here. College is a wholly unique and chaotic experience—during this time I think it is incredibly important for our students to check in on their mental wellbeing, and I hope to foster a space in which our students don’t feel ashamed or judged.
I have seen the intricacies of academia as a queer first-generation student. The boundaries to knowledge were overwhelming at times. Every student is a unique and I aim to advise them by looking at their individual needs, and I hope to break some of their barriers to access this way. I believe that having a supportive, understanding, and collaborative relationship with students is vital.
Community can be integral to a student’s academic success. Students have the opportunity to form connections with faculty, find mentors, or groups with peer support. I have seen students flourish in their curriculum as they find more community and support. These resources and safe spaces for students can be everything, and I highly encourage my students to get involved in whatever way works best for them.
About Me
My name is Jocelyn! I am a first-generation college graduate, receiving my B.A. in English at UNM. After that, I began teaching for the English Department while pursuing my graduate degree in Literature. Working with students is something that I hold dear, and I am thrilled to be continuing that as an advisor!
I have an unconditional love for my little weenie dog Joni--but if I’m not hanging out with her, you can catch me geeking out over horror movies and cryptids.
